FAQ:
Q: What books do you use?
A: Most beginning students will use the Essential Elements book one for violin and then the Suzuki Book 1 for violin. For students age 6 or younger, I generally use the "Adventures in Violinland Series. For students with prior violin experience, the books we use will vary based on their experience.
Q: Where can I get a violin? Is it acceptable to order a violin from Amazon? How much will it cost?
A: I do not recommend purchasing an instrument from Amazon. There is a lot that goes into the making of a violin, and generally you get what you pay for. The $80 Amazon violin is what we call a "VSO" or "Violin-shaped-object in the biz... They look like violins, but often have lots of significant flaws in them that make them virtually unplayable and tend to frustrate students because of their poor quality. Plan to spend a minimum of $200 on a violin suitable for a beginner, or rent an instrument for about $20-25 a month from a reputable, local company where you can get the violin serviced should the violin need maintenance or repairs. My first recommendation for beginners who wish to rent is Psarianos Violins in Troy and Ann Arbor. Beginners who wish to purchase a violin right away I send to Shar Music in Ann Arbor where they can purchase an instrument outfit for about $200.
